Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center (RGCIRC) is a medical facility and non-profit research institute based in Delhi, India specializing in cancer treatment and research. It is one of the largest medical centers for cancer care in Asia. RGCIRC is the Indraprastha Community and Cancer Research Center project, a nonprofit public society. The institute was founded in 1996.

History and overview

The Indraprastha Cancer Research Center and Society is not for public medical benefit society. It was formed in 1994 under a community registration law, 1860. The Institute began functioning on July 1, 1996 when the soft opening was performed by Sonia Gandhi. However, officially inaugurated by Indian President Shankar Dayal Sharma, in the presence of Sonia Gandhi and others on August 20, 1996. It started as a hospital with 152 beds, and is currently a hospital with 302 beds. The institute diagnoses and treats about 60,000 patients per year. Since its establishment, the institute has provided services to more than two hundred thousand patients from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and other countries. The institute is ISO: 9001 and ISO: 14001 certified. In February 2013, the institute introduced electrical technology as a service called 'NanoKnife', a minimally invasive cancer treatment. On October 12, 2016, a new cancer center was established in NitiBagh, South Delhi by the institute.

Department and facilities

The medical center is spread out in about two hundred thousand square feet, with a capacity of 300 beds. 57 consulting rooms are spread across three floors of the institute. It has 8 state-of-the-art modular Operation Theater with three stages of air filtration and gas flushing system, and 2 Minor Operations Theater for Day Care Surgery. The ICU Surgery is 27 beds and the Medical ICU is 11 beds. The institute has a Leukemia ward, a Thyroid Ward, a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, a MUD transplant unit, and a stem cell transplant unit. It has Kidney Replacement therapy facilities and various endoscopes.

Academics and research

In addition to patient care, the institute also studies and conducts scientific research on aspects of cancer and in particular to investigate incidents, prevalence, distribution, causes, symptoms and to promote its prevention and provide healing. The institute partnered with Thomas Jefferson University.

  • One year fellowship program recognized by the Indian Medical Association- Academy of Medical Specialties, Hyderabad. Reception is made in October and January.
  • The Institute also undertakes a short-term fellowship program in Oncological Radiology sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna Europe.
  • It also provides a Diplomate of National Board (DNB) course that is recognized by the National Examination Agency, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India.
  • Other destinations include B.Sc. in Medical Technology, Nurse Care Course and Oncology Maintenance Course.
