St. Baldrick's Foundation is a nonprofit organization with the goal of raising funds to help find a cure for children with cancer. The name of the foundation is not associated with a recognized Catholic Church Saint, but is founded on the word play and seizure of the title of sainthood. Family-sponsored volunteers, friends and employers shave their heads or "cut" their horses' tail in solidarity with children who usually lose their hair during cancer treatments to raise funds.

Histori

Tim Kenny, John Bender, and Enda McDonnell founded St. Baldrick's Foundation on July 4, 1999 as a challenge to see how they will give back their "luck in the business". The inaugural event was held on March 17, 2000 at Jim Prady's Pub in Manhattan, where $ 104,000 was raised by 19 shavees. The foundation was officially registered as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit charity in 2004. During their first year as an official foundation, they managed to collect over $ 5.3 million for the Children's Oncology Group. On January 9 and 10, St. Baldrick hosted their inaugural Priority Research Summit in New York City. Members of the board of directors and executives are present, along with 16 pediatric oncology researchers. According to their official website, 2012 marks the $ 100 million granted in child cancer research funds since their first year as an independent foundation in 2005.

Events

All events are organized by volunteers in the community, with foundations providing planning and support tools. Volunteers can find nearby events and help organize the event space, shave their heads, cut their heads, or a combination of the three. Events have occurred in all 50 US states and 28 countries. Since 2000, the organizer of St. Martin and volunteers have hosted nearly 4,200 head shaving events and shaved over 190,500 heads, raising more than $ 118 million for childhood life-saving cancer research. After the volunteers have achieved several repetitive years, the foundation rewards them through a "knight ceremony". According to Plenty Consulting, 2,600 volunteers have so far received the Knight of the Bald Table award in 2015, awarded for seven years of service to the organization. Charity Navigator gives a foundation of 76.99 out of a possible score of 100 (March 15, 2018) and only Star One in Financial Score of a possible 4 star rating. According to the Better Business Bureau, nonprofits meet 20 Standards for Charitable Accountability.
