The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization established in the United States that regulates experiences described as "wishes" for children with life-threatening medical conditions. To be eligible for a wish, the child must be between 3 and 17 years of age at the time the application is filed, even if the pediatrician ultimately decides whether a child is eligible.

The national headquarters and founding chapters of the Make-A-Wish Foundation are in Phoenix. The organization provides hope through its 62 chapters located across the United States. Make-A-Wish also operates in 45 other countries around the world through 38 other affiliate offices.

Histori

In the spring of 1980, Christopher James Greicius was 7 years old (13 August 1972 - 3 May 1980) treated for leukemia. He aspires to be a police officer. US Customs Officer Tommy Austin befriended Chris and worked with officers in the Arizona Department of Public Safety to plan an experience to uplift Greicius. Chris spends the day as a police officer, rides in a police helicopter, receives a specially designed police uniform, and is sworn in as the first public honors patrol officer in state history. Greicius died soon after, but his wish became an inspiration for the Make-A-Wish organization.

The professional wrestler John Cena holds the title for most of the desires given by one individual, with over 500 wishes. Singer Justin Bieber has volunteered at more than 250 requests. National female student association Chi Omega has raised more than $ 14 million for Make-A-Wish since 2001.

Process

Children who are eligible for acceptance may be referred to by one of the following three sources:

Medical professional who takes care of the child
Parent or legal guardian
Potential child desires

To refer a child, the right referral source may use the Make-A-Wish online request form or contact the Make-A-Wish chapter closest to them. All medical information is considered confidential and not discussed with outsiders unless it is necessary for the wishes and the parent or guardian of the child has given their consent.

A child with a life-threatening medical condition that has reached the age of 3 years and under the age of 17 at the time of reference, is potentially eligible for a wish. After the child is referred, the treating doctor should determine whether the child is medically qualified for a wish, based on the medical criteria set by Make-A-Wish. In addition, a child can not accept requests from other giver organizations.

Each Make-A-Wish chapter follows specific policies and guidelines to give the child's wish. Make-A-Wish works closely with doctors and families expect doctors to determine the most appropriate time to grant such wishes, keeping in mind the child's treatment protocol or other issues. Most application requests are divided into five categories: I want to go, I want to be, I want to meet, I want to have, or I want to give.

The national board of directors helped map the Make-A-Wish program. This board has a variety of experiences and skills that help maintain Make-A-Wish status as the largest hope-making organization in the US. The Council determines its mission and vision, evaluates and supports the president and chief executive officer, and protects the Make-A-Wish A-Wish Assets. The board enhances the public position of Make-A-Wish, ensures accountability, maintains legal integrity, and assesses its own performance.

The senior leadership team consists of the top management of Make-A-Wish. Each member is a national office leader in a discipline that includes grants, fundraising, law, brand development, and operational activities. The President and CEO guide strategic plans in areas such as board development, talent development, fundraising, and corporate relationships.

Make-A-Wish stops granting wishes involving hunting-related activities, including fishing, use of firearms or other weapons designed to cause animal damage in 1996. This is largely due to concerns about child safety, pressure from sensitive donors animals, and criticism from animal rights groups. In response, three organizations were formed: Hunt of a Lifetime, which arranged a hunting trip for severely ill children; Catch-a-Dream, conceived by Mississippi outdoorsman Bruce Brady and shaped by loved ones after Brady's death from cancer to provide a hunting experience for sick children; and Life Hunts, founded by Buckmasters American Deer Foundation.
