Histori
The charity was founded in 1911 as a Society for Cancer Prevention and Relief by Douglas Macmillan after his father's death from the disease. In 1924, his name was changed to National Society for Cancer Relief , which was retained until 1989 when it was changed to Cancer Relief Macmillan Fund , later changed to Macmillan Cancer Relief . From April 5, 2006, Macmillan Cancer Relief is known as Macmillan Cancer Support, as it more accurately describes its role in supporting people living with cancer. It has adopted the principles of being "a source of support" and a "power for change".
Douglas Macmillan is a vegetarian. In 1909, he wrote an open letter to all Christians titled Shall We Slay that encouraged orthodox Christians to consider vegetarianism.
As a National Society for Cancer Assistance, the organization provides funds to support the work of Breast Care and Mastectomy Association of Great Britain that will later become Breast Cancer Treatment.
Macmillan Cancer Support is one of the 50 largest charitable organizations in the UK ranked by annual expenditure. This is governed by the Supervisory Board and Executive Management Team.
The headquarters of the charity is based in London. Macmillan Cancer Support merged with Cancerbackup charity information in 2008.

Controversy over fundraising method
Macmillan faces criticism when placing ads on Facebook and on Google linking viral fund raising activities, Ice Bucket Challenge by itself. It has been suggested that the goal of Macmillan's marketing campaign is to divert web traffic and then awareness and donations from smaller charities with whom the most related challenges are related to Motor Neuron Disease and ALS.
Amanda Neylon, head of digital at Macmillan, said the charity was behind the Ice Bucket Challenge, which asked participants to pour a bucket of ice water in their heads, criticized for being too slow on taking for a social #nomakeupselfie media campaign. When losing the #nomakeupselfie campaign, Neylon said: "We're too slow - it's a great motivator to be much better the next time it comes."
