Evarts Ambrose Graham, M.D., F.A.C.S. (1883-1957) is an American academician, doctor, and surgeon.

Born in Chicago, Illinois for a surgeon, Dr. David Wilson Graham, and Ida Ansbach Barned Graham, Evarts attended Princeton University (AB, 1904) and received an MD from Rush Medical College in 1907. Graham was later trained as an operating resident at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago, and later as a graduate student in the field chemistry at the University of Chicago. There, he meets his wife, Helen Tredway, Ph.D. (1890-1971), a biochemist and pharmacologist. Evarts served as Major (O4) at the US Army Medical Corps from 1917 to 1919, and was originally placed at Camp Lee (now Fort Lee, Virginia). He completed a revolutionary new job on surgical techniques for the treatment of empyema, which had become important after an influenza pandemic in 1918. Graham served in France as commander of the US Army's 34th Evacuation Hospital.

Careers at the University of Washington

After leaving the military service, he was recruited to Washington University in St. Louis. Louis, MO as Professor of Bixby Surgery. A thoracic surgeon, he is best known for collaborating with Drs. Jacob J. Singer, Kenneth Bell, and William Adams on successful first lung removal for the treatment of bronchogenic carcinoma in 1933. The patient was another physician (a gynecologist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). James Lee Gilmore. In 1924, together with his Warren colleague Henry Cole, Graham developed a cholecystography technique, the first procedure for the imaging of the gallbladder and the detection of cholelithiasis. Dr. Graham was instrumental in establishing the American Board of Surgery in 1937 and he was active as a medical editor and author. Graham is the Editor-in-Chief of Yearbook of Surgery & amp; Journal of Thoracic Surgery , and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Annals of Surgery .

Graham served as chair of the surgical department at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) from 1919 to 1951, and surgical chief at Barnes Hospital, the medical center of WUSM teaching, now known as Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Graham and Dr. Ernst Wynder undertook the first systematic research on the carcinogenic effects of cigarettes conducted on a large scale, and they published their results on a 1950 paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Diseases & amp; Death

Graham himself had been a long-term cigarette smoker until his own research, known as Wynder and Graham Study 1950, supported the link between smoking and illness, and he ironically died of lung cancer in 1957. Graham survived by his wife and two sons - Evarts A. Graham Jr. (1921-1996) - an editor, and Dr. David Tredway Graham (1918-1999) - an internist. Interestingly, patients with lung cancer surgery. Evarts Graham in 1933, Dr. Gilmore, also living longer than 6 years, died in 1963 at the age of 78 years.

Honors & amp; Awards

Dr. Graham was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1941, and was awarded the Lister Medal in 1942 for his contribution to the surgery. The corresponding Lister Oration, given at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, was not delivered until 1947, and was titled 'Some Aspects of Bronchogenic Carcinoma'. Other awards include the gold medal from the Radiological Society of North America; Leonard Research Prize from American Roentgen Ray Society; the gold medal of St. Louis Medical Society; gold medal from Southern Medical Society; and the International Congress of Surgeons presidency in 1953-1954. Graham received honorary doctorates from the University of Cincinnati, Princeton University, Western Reserve University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Chicago. Named lectures include Harvey, Mutter, McArthur, Shattuck, Alvarez, Joyce, Arthur Dean Bevan, Caldwell, Balfour, and Judd Lectures.
