Virgil Craig Jordan , OBE, PhD, DSc, FMedSci (born in Texas, US, UK/America together nationally) is a scientist specializing in medicines for the care and prevention of breast cancer. Currently, he is Professor of Breast Medical Oncology, and Professor of Molecular and Cellular Oncology at MD Anderson University Texas Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. Previously, he was the Scientific Director and Deputy Chief of Oncology at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center of Georgetown University. Jordan was the first to discover the nature of breast cancer prevention from tamoxifen and the scientific principles for adjuvant therapy with antihormones. Recently his work has developed into the prevention of various diseases in women with the discovery of drug groups, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). Currently, he plans to develop a new Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for postmenopausal women who prevent breast cancer and do not increase the risk of breast cancer.

Raloxifene's Effect on Breast Cancer Risk in Post-Menopausal Women - Results from more randomized trials were among the top 20 papers cited in breast cancer research during 2003 and 2004..

Research career

Jordan began work on anti-estrogen activity-structures as part of his PhD program at Leeds University. During that time, he met Arthur Walpole, the patent holder for the drug that became tamoxifen.

In September 1972, Jordan became a Visiting Scientist at Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, Massachusetts. While there he began to examine the idea that tamoxifen, a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), can block estrogen receptors in breast tumors. Estrogen receptors in breast tumors attract estrogen which is then absorbed into cancer cells and encourages cells to divide, causing cancer to grow. Until now, the treatment for this type of breast cancer is oophorectomy.

Jordan returned to Leeds University as a Lecturer in Pharmacology between 1974 and 1979, after which he spent a year at Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

In 1980, Jordan joined the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he began to see the effects of tamoxifen and other SERMs, raloxifene, on bone density and coronary systems. This is necessary because of concerns that long-term use of SERM can lead to osteoporosis and heart disease. Jordan's research shows that postmenopausal women who take these drugs do not suffer from a decrease in bone density or an increase in blood cholesterol. Raloxifene is now used in the prevention of osteoporosis. Jordan obtained a full professorship in Wisconsin in 1985, the same year his alma mater awarded him DSc awards.

In 1993, Jordan became Professor of Cancer Pharmacology at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, IL., And director of the Breast Cancer Research Program at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University. He was the prime holder of Diana Putri Wales Cancer Research Professor (1999-2004).

In January 2005, Jordan was Chairman Alfred G. Knudson of the Cancer Research at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, PA. He recently published a work showing that estrogen, given at the right time, causes the destruction of cancer cells rather than feeding their growth. Jordan is the Scientific Director of Lombardi's Comprehensive Cancer Center, Professor of Oncology and Pharmacology, Deputy Chief of the Department of Oncology, and Vincent T. Lombardi Chair of Cancer Cancer Researcher, Georgetown University, Washington, DC, before moving to Texas.
