History

The Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital was founded as Brunswick New Town Hospital in 1884, but it was renamed the John Wells Memorial Hospital in 1889 when community leader and volunteer Grace Tileston Wells donated a building on the corner Somerset and Division roads in honor of her late husband, John Wells. The first small building was expanded in 1916 to accommodate the growing and renamed area of Middlesex General Hospital . In 1958, an additional hospital was built that housed the first vascular laboratory in New Jersey, an intensive care unit, a cardiopulmonary laboratory, a thirteen-room operating room, and increased the number of beds by 287. At this time, the Department of Clinical Research was established, -X begins, and additional hospitals are established.

In 1986, the hospital was renamed Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital after Robert Wood Johnson II, former president and chairman of the board Johnson & amp; Johnson.

In 2014, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Somerset Medical Center officially completed their merger.

In 2015, Barnabas Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Health System signed an agreement outlining the merging of the two health systems. Once completed, the transaction will create the largest health care system in New Jersey and one of the largest in the country. New Jersey Attorney General should review the agreement before the official, in the hope that the merger will be completed by 2016. On March 30, 2016, the two official health systems merged and formed RWJBarnabas.

In addition, by 2015, the hospital opened The Laurie Proton Therapy Center. Possible thanks to the top prizes of Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation as well as support from individual donors, it is now home to the Third S2VII S2 S2 S2 Proton System in the world. This center treats prostate, breast, lung, head and neck, brain, pediatric, pancreas, and other cancers with what is currently considered the most appropriate form of cancer treatment. Instead of using conventional radiation therapy to go away destroying cancer cells, proton therapy uses proton beams that can be directed directly at the tumor. There is less damage to surrounding tissue, and doctors may use higher radiation doses than conventional therapy. This treatment is painless, has mild side effects, and has minimal risk. Proton therapy is part of a complete range of advanced cancer treatment options offered by RWJ in partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and private physicians in the community.
