Ralph H. Hruban is professor of pathology and oncology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He is currently Director of Pancreatic Cancer Research Center Sol Goldman at Johns Hopkins, Director of the Gastrointestinal/Liver Pathology Division, and Director of the Pathology Department. He is a world expert on pancreatic cancer.

Education

Hruban received a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago, and Doctor of Medicine from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1985. He completed a pathology residency at Johns Hopkins, and then spent a year as a fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Careers

In 1990, Hruban returned to Johns Hopkins.

Hruban is an expert in the field of pancreatic cancer pathology. He has examined the characterization of PanINs, a precursor lesion that causes invasive pancreatic cancer.

Hruban founded the National Family Pancreas Tumor Registry at Johns Hopkins, which serves as a resource for patients and their families.

Hruban is the Director of Science for the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, and Chair of the advisory committee for Alan Mason Chesney Medical Archives, the official warehouse of Johns Hopkins University.

Recognition

He has written over 700 re-reviewed texts and five books, including a standard textbook on pancreatic pathology (AFIP Fascicle on Pancreatic Tumors) and the World Health Organization's "blue book" on gastrointestinal tumors. He is recognized by the Institute for Scientific Information as a highly quoted researcher and by the Indicator of Essential Science as the most frequently quoted pancreatic cancer scientist.

Dr. Hruban has received numerous awards including the Arthur Purdy Stout Award for significant career achievements in surgical pathology, Ramzi Cotran Award from the United States and Canada Academy of Pathology, PanCAN Medical Visionary Award, Separate Achievement Award Ranice W. Crosby in Art as Applied for Medicine, Ruth C. Brufsky Award for Excellence in Clinical Research for Pancreatic Cancer, Frank Netter Award for Special Contributions to Medical Education, Johns Hopkins University Distinguished Alumni Award, Science Team Award from the American Association for Cancer Research, and five teaching awards from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2013. Hruban also received the Young Researcher Award from the United States and the Canadian Pathology Academy, and the Medical Visionary Award from the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
