The Peter MacCallum Cancer Center , also known as the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute and commonly abbreviated as Peter Mac , is an Australian oncology research, cancer treatment, and a professional cancer expert training center located in Melbourne, Victoria. The center is named in honor of Sir Peter MacCallum. Since June 2016, Peter Mac has been placed inside the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Center (VCCC) in Parkville.

Together with VCCC, Peter Mac is the only Australian public hospital dedicated to cancer, research and education care. It is also one of the few cancer treatment facilities in the world that has an integrated clinic and laboratory program located next to the hospital. This co-location facilitates the translation of research results into clinical results within a single site.

Research programs at the center include the Cancer Cell Cancer Program of the Australian Cancer Program (ACRF) and the ACRF Victoria Center for Genomic Functionalities in Cancer.

Peter Mac offers many ways of integrated services, including medical oncology and radiation oncology facilities and links with allied health services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetic, speech therapy, and social services.

History

The cancer hospital of the Victorian Cancer Institute was named Peter MacCallum Clinic after the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Melbourne Peter MacCallum, who along with Rutherford Kaye-Scott had an important role in its founding in 1949. At that time it was a common practice not to inform patients they have cancer. It is estimated that because radiotherapy is also quite commonly used at the time to treat non-cancerous conditions such as severe acne, "strawberry birthmark", frozen shoulder, keloid scar and also to provide valuable and non-invasive means for medical sterilization, "Peter MacCallum Clinic" will be far less threatening because the clinic can be positioned as a specialist radiotherapy center rather than considered a special cancer hospital. In 1986, the clinic was renamed as Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute.
