Northside Hospital Health System

The Northside Hospital Healthcare System is a network of medical facilities in Metro Atlanta, Georgia, the region, comprises three acute care hospitals and over 150 outpatient facilities to provide a range of medical services. Hospitals on the north side include:

History

Northside Hospital - Atlanta

Northside Hospital opened its doors and took care of its first patient on July 6, 1970. The original 245-bed, five-story facility, located about 15 miles north of downtown Atlanta, opened with a 24-hour emergency department, 80 doctors and more than 400 other professionals. In the four decades since its inception, Northside has undergone a dramatic transformation and now has nearly 2,900 doctors and 621 licensed beds in Atlanta hospitals.

Over the years, Northside has undergone many expansions and developments. Five years after its opening, for example, the hospital completed the Behavioral Health Wing. Radiation and CT facilities were added in 1977. In 1985, the first Child Care Center in Northside was completed, and a year later the 5-story South Tower was completed. The Emergency Department was only completed in 1995, and in 2007 four floors were added to the Women's Center. In 2010 a new 36-place Bone Marrow Transplant/Leukemia Unit was completed. In 1946, the first hospital in Forsyth County, Georgia, Mary Alice Hospital, was founded by Dr. James Mashburn. The hospital was later purchased by the Georgia Baptist and renamed the Baptist Medical Center. In 1999, Georgia Baptist rebuilt the hospital, and Northside Hospital got it in October 2002, changing its name to Northside Hospital-Forsyth.

Currently, a community hospital with 304 beds, not-for-profit and four adjacent medical office buildings are on 150 hectares, with over 700,000 square feet, in Cumming. The hospital has a medical staff of nearly 2,900 doctors and 3,100 employees.

Northside Hospital-Forsyth opened the Women's Center on August 6, 2008, bringing newborn and newborn services closer to home. The hospital also gave birth to her first baby - the first baby born in Forsyth County hospital in more than 25 years. In 2013, the hospital is approved to offer a Level III Intensive Neonatal Care Unit. In June 2012, Northside Hospital-Forsyth opened a new four-suite outpatient operation center, located just outside Ga 20 on Haw Creek Drive. The Northside-Forsyth Outpatient Surgery Center provides doctors and patients with easy access to procedures in GI specialties, general surgery, ophthalmology, small orthopedics including hand surgery, podiatric surgery and plastic and cosmetic surgery.

The newly opened Northside/Dawson Medical Campus in December 2012 and located north of the outlet mall at GA 400 in Dawsonville. The 34,500 square foot medical office building, giving Northside space to expand imaging services and offer more diverse medical services. This facility is home to a number of physician practices, representing many medical specialties including cardiology, OB/GYN, gastroenterology (GI), pulmonology and general surgery.

North America <> Northside - Cherokee

In April 1962, R.T. Jones Memorial Hospital opened its doors in Canton, Georgia, with 62 semi-private rooms and 17 staff doctors. In October 1997, with about 100 doctors, the hospital joined the Northside Hospital system and became Northside Hospital-Cherokee.

In May 2017, Northside Hospital-Cherokee moved to a new hospital location and a new parkway accessible from exit 19 and 19A from GA HWY 575. The new campus comprises 118 hospital beds, a medical office building, and 1,500 parking spaces in the 50-hectare Complex - only part of the total 300 hectares available to meet current and future community health care needs.

The hospital is currently undergoing construction to add two more floors to the hospital patient tower.

Cherokee Community Facilities

In September 2013, Northside opened the Northside-Cherokee Towne Lake Medical Campus, located at 900 Towne Lake Parkway in Woodstock. The 100,817 square foot medical office building contains a wide range of outpatient healthcare services and doctors, representing many medical specialties.

In 2010, Northside opened Northside/Holly Springs Imaging, Cherokee County's first full service imaging center. The facility offers a comprehensive range of services including bone densitometry, digital diagnostic radiology, digital mammography (screening and diagnostics) with Computer-Aided Detection, breast stereotactic procedures, fluoroscopy, MRI, multi-slice CT, nuclear medicine and ultrasound.

Gwinnett County

In August 2017, the Northside Hospital and Gwinnett Health System announced that they submitted a proposal to merge the two hospital systems in early 2018. The new health system will include hospitals in Canton, Cumming and Duluth, both as cancer care centers, imaging centers, urgent care centers and other outpatient locations across the state. Overall, the Northside-Gwinnett joint system will have 1,479 beds, nearly 21,000 employees and 3,500 doctors on staff.
