Joel Lewis Brind is a professor of human biology and endocrinology at Baruch College, City University of New York since 1986, research biochemist since 1981, and CEO of Natural Food Science, maker of glycine supplement products established in 2010. Brind is a major proponent of breast cancer hypothesis, which argues that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer. This idea was rejected by a major medical professional organization and there is ample evidence in the peer-reviewed medical literature that denies it. Brind publicly belittled major medical professional organizations and journals, accusing them of deliberate concealment with the aim of "protecting the abortion industry." Brind insists that the National Cancer Institute "is just a corrupt federal agency like the IRS and the NSA."

Kehidupan awal, pendidikan, dan konversi agama

Brind grew up in Laurelton, Queens, where he decided he wanted to become a biochemist at the age of 10 after reading a Life magazine magazine where the cover story illustrates the recent discoveries made by scientists about the passage in the way working cells, using an electron microscope. He has a bachelor's degree from Yale (1971) and a Ph.D. from New York University in biochemistry, immunology and physiology. Four years after receiving his PhD in 1981, Brind experienced a spiritual awakening, after which he converted to Christianity, and decided to try to use science to pursue what he saw as a "noble task" to make women reluctant to have abortions.

Advocacy

Working on studies of amino acid metabolism and aging, Brind concluded that most diets lack glycine of amino acids, and that these deficiencies are responsible for diseases caused by chronic inflammation, including arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. This conclusion is not supported by mainstream medicine. He also attributes what are perceived as normal responses such as pain and stiffness after heavy exercise and injury, lack of glycine. In 2010, Brind founded Natural Food Science, LLC, where Proglyta and Sweetamine glycine supplement products are produced and sold.

After conversion to Christianity, Brind began working as a consultant and expert witness for the cause of anti-abortion. Discovered Magazine reported in 2003 that since 1997, "Brind has spent about 90 percent of his time outside the classroom investigating and publishing" abortion-breast cancer links he claims, testifying "in courts and homes -home in Arizona, Florida, Massachusetts, Ohio, North Dakota, New Hampshire, and Alaska. "

He fought against the legalization of RU-486, testifying at a federal hearing that "thousands of women" would develop breast cancer as a result of drug use. Brind was an invitee at the National Cancer Institute conference on the issue of abortion-breast cancer in which he was the only member who offered a different opinion. In a meeting between Colorado Right to Life and Denver affiliate Susan G. Komen for Cure on Commenting on Planned Parenthood, Brind urged breast cancer groups to reconsider the idea that abortion is linked to breast cancer.

In 1999, Brind founded the Institute of Breast Cancer Prevention, a nonprofit group that promotes the link between abortion and breast cancer. The group is identified in the academic literature as an anti-abortion activist group that promotes "the idea that links with cancer have been proven and concealed deliberately by medical institutions."

Meta-analysis

Brind et al. (1996) conducted a meta-analysis of 23 independent epidemiological studies. It was calculated that there was an average relative risk of 1.3 (1,2 - 1,4) increased risk of breast cancer. Meta-analysis was criticized at the Journal of the National Cancer Institute for neglecting the role of response bias and for "obscuring associations with cause-and-effect." It was also criticized for selection bias by using research with highly variable results, using various types of research and not working with raw data from several studies, and including studies that have methodological weaknesses. The statistician who worked with Brind later stated their findings: "I have some doubts, I do not think the problem has been resolved. When we talked about the conclusion, he [Brind] wanted to make the strongest statement I tried to muffle them a bit, but Dr. Brind is very insistent about his opinion. "

Criticism

Experts believe Brind is facing the methodological weakness of some of the studies he used as evidence for a breast-cancer abortion relationship. Furthermore, medical researchers noted Brind exaggerated his findings because his own study showed a "almost statistically significant" increase in breast cancer rates. In response to criticism a journal editor who published the research Brind noted with concern:
