Histori
Edward Sanitorium
Founded by Eudora Hull Gaylord Spalding in 1907 as a memorial to her husband Edward Gaylord, Edward Sanitorium was one of the first centers for tuberculosis in the Great Lakes region and became a model for other centers in the country.
In 1920, the fire destroyed the main Sanitorium building. The new fire-resistant structure was built at a cost of $ 150,000. The Sanitorium flourished in the 1930s, thanks in part to the support of Joy Morton, owner of Morton Salt Company and founder of The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois.
As the tuberculosis epidemic subsided, Edward turned his attention to other more urgent public health needs.
Edward Hospital, 1955-1987
On October 1, 1955, Edward Sanitorium officially reopened its doors as Edward Hospital, an acute care facility with 45 beds. The first patient in the hospital was Frederich Maurer, Jr. who was 23 months old, brought in after he was kicked by a horse.
Edward became a public entity, a tax backed in 1959. As the Naperville, Illinois community grew, Edward expanded, adding patient care units and providing patients with more advanced technology. In 1962, the hospital expanded to 110 beds with sophisticated electric beds, nurse call communication systems and oxygen delivered. Only five years later, in 1967, Edward grew to 133 beds with an additional $ 620,000 for the main building.
In 1981, Edward had 162 patient beds and 125 doctors. Eugene Morris, president of the hospital since 1959, retired. In the following years, Edward rejected mergers, acquisitions, and management offers from hospitals in the competitive Chicago area and remained independent. In 1984, Edward became a nonprofit private organization.
Edward Hospital, 1988-today
In 1988, the arrival of Pamela Meyer (now Pam Davis) as president and chief executive officer marked the start of a dramatic and sustained era of growth and innovation at Edward Hospital. Since then, Edward Hospital evolved into Edward Health Services Corporation in the 1990s and, now, Edward Hospital & amp; Health services.
The first major step under Davis is the opening of Edward Health & amp; Fitness Center on the campus of Naperville, the first medical center in DuPage County, Illinois. (Edward Health & Fitness Center, at Woodridge, opened in 1997.)
In 1990, Edward introduced a comprehensive heart treatment program, offering open heart surgery, diagnostic services, and cardiac rehabilitation. The heart center of the first outpatient in the state, Edward Cardiovascular Institute, opened in 1993 and in 1998, Edward became the first health care facility in DuPage County to screen people for heart disease using a CT electron calcium assessment (Ultra Fast Heart Scan ).
The 1990s also saw the opening of Edward's Cancer Center, the expansion of the emergency department, the opening of Edward's Health Center in Bolingbrook, Illinois and Naperville, the acquisition of Linden Oaks Hospital (full-service healthcare facility) and the opening of the Surgical Center in Naperville.
Additionally, in 1992, Edward became the first hospital in Illinois to offer all the patient's private rooms, one of the many innovations in patient care and customer service that Edward has known. Others include animal-assisted therapy, healing arts, concierge services and valet parking.
Modern Healthcare magazine recognized its spectacular growth in 1998 by naming Edward as the 34th fastest growing hospital in the US and growing fastest in Illinois. In 1999, Edward reaffirmed the rankings with the announcement of a "Growth Zone" for the 50-hectare (20Ã, ha) Naperville campus-a $ 90 million renovation and expansion project to ensure high-quality healthcare for a fast-growing community. Over the next few years, the project resulted in expanded outpatient services, expanded female imaging services, a new operating room for minimally invasive procedures, a new mother/baby suite, and a four-story Education Center and a 900-space parking garage.
Since 2000, the speed and scope of expansion has increased. Edward opened the first pediatric emergency department in DuPage County, and also reached Level III titles for the neonatal intensive care unit, the highest-level treatment in Illinois in 2000. In addition, in 2004, he expanded his emergency department with another 56,000 square. - Legs (5,200 m 2 ) to allow for annual growth in the number of emergency visits and areas of personal and efficient care and care for patients.
In 2002, 71 Edward Heart Hospital beds opened (the first in Illinois) and strengthened Edward as a national leader in elaborate cardiac care. The reputation was further enhanced in 2005 when HealthGrades placed Edward # 1 for cardiac surgery in the Chicago area and again in 2006 when Edward was named the Top 100 Solucient Hospital for cardiovascular care.
In 2005 Edward Cancer Center opened. The 40,000 square foot facility (3,700 m 2 ) doubles the space previously available for medical oncology and radiation therapy.
Also in 2005, Edward became the only hospital serving DuPage and Will Counties to achieve the Magnet designation for nursing excellence. At that time, only two percent of the country's 6,000 hospitals have been honored by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. 2006 saw Edward expand access to comfortable and high quality health care at Plainfield with the opening of Edward Plainfield Outpatient Center, a 100,000 square foot facility (9,300 m 2 ) providing immediate care, imaging and classroom services and Public health events to residents in one of the fastest growing areas of Illinois. Edward Sleep Center and Edward's administrative office opened at Diehl Street in Warrenville as well.
The Edward Plainfield Outpatient Center is located on the 60-acre Edward Plainfield (24Ã, ha) campus, which is also the location of the Medical Office Building (opened in 2006) and the future home of Edward Plainfield Hospital (request for approval to build), Plainfield Surgery Center 2008) and Edward Plainfield Cancer Center (2009).
Linden Oaks in Edward began 2007 with the opening of Arabella House, an eight-bed bedding home for women with eating disorders. Home helps patients return to the "real world", from hospital care back to family, home, office, school. Also in 2007, Edward announced plans for nearly $ 200 million "makeovers" on his Naperville campus that will result in improved OB services, renovate and expand surgical services, new cardiac cath capacity and build new three-story additions for Edward Heart Hospital. Edward closed 2007 by completing $ 49.7 million, three floors, 76,000 square feet (7,100m 2 ), 42 extra beds to the Edward Heart Hospital building. This expansion includes 28 beds for medical/surgical patients and 14 beds for intensive care unit patients.
Edward was ranked 10th as Chicago's largest hospital by Crain's Chicago Business in 2007, the largest company in Naperville and the busiest hospital in DuPage County for the release of inpatients, births and emergency visits, according to the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council.
In 2008, Edward's growth in the southwestern suburbs continued with the opening of Plainfield Surgery Center on the campus of Edward Plainfield and Edward Healthcare Center in Oswego. On the Naperville campus, Edward discusses the increasing demand for services with a two-storey, 360-space settlement to the South Parking Deck.
Edward Cancer Center started RapidArc, a radiation therapy technology that treats patients up to eight times faster than conventional or helical IMRT delivery systems.
Today, Edward & amp; Health Services is a comprehensive regional healthcare provider. By 2016, Edward Hospital has 354 private patient rooms and 7,700 employees, including 1,340 nurses and medical staff over 1,900 doctors, representing nearly 100 medical and surgical specializations and subspecialties. Ninety-eight percent of Edward's doctors are certified.
Edward also provides imaging technology, care for critical newborns, minimally invasive surgery, the latest clinical trials and behavioral health services through Linden Oaks in Edward.
In July 2013, Edward Hospital joined Elmhurst Memorial Hospital to create a new health care system currently called Edward-Elmhurst Health.
