First Lady of Texas
John Connally started his career in politics at that time to work as a member of Congress (and future United States President) Lyndon B. Johnson. John Connally was elected Governor of Texas in 1962. He was re-elected for two additional terms.
During his tenure as First Lady, Connally created the gardens at the Texas Governor's Mansion and also collected the silver of the country.
Kennedy Assassination
On November 22, 1963, Connally and her husband were riding a presidential limousine carrying President John F. Kennedy when he was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. While driving with President Kennedy, Connally told President Kennedy, "Mr. President, you can not say that Dallas does not love you," which President Kennedy acknowledged by saying "No, you certainly can not." Within seconds, he heard the first of what he then concluded was three shots in quick succession.
President and Governor Connally was shot, causing fatal wounds to the President and a serious one to the Governor. Mrs. Connally gets down to the car to care for her husband, who slumps after the second shot. "I never look back again, I'm just trying to take care of him," he said. Connally has said that the most enduring image he had about the killings in Dallas was a mixture of blood and roses. "This is a picture of yellow roses and red roses and blood all over the car... all over us," he said in a 2003 interview with The Associated Press. "I'll never forget it... It's so fast and short, so strong."
In his 2003 book From Love Field - Our Final Hours with John F. Kennedy, Connally shares his personal diary of an event written in the days immediately after the assassination. In his book, he says that he believes that her husband was hit by a bullet separated from the two that hit Kennedy.

Advocacy work and charity
After serving as First Lady of Texas, Connally works to raise money for some charity activities including Teleton Network Children's Miracle for Hermann Children's Hospital. He worked at Anderson University Anderson College Cancer Supervisory Board from 1984, and the funds in his name raised millions for research programs and patients. He was later named Woman of Distinction by Crohn's and Colitis Foundation. Connally is also a member of the Texas History Commission and helped complete Tranquility Park located in Houston.
In 1988, Connally was diagnosed with breast cancer. He was treated and went to forgiveness. The following year, Richard Nixon, Donald Trump, and Barbara Walters turned into a gala to honor him and raise money for diabetes research. In 1998, ten years after the diagnosis of breast cancer, Connally celebrated her 80th birthday with fellow breast cancer patients at a ceremony at the Nellie B. Connally Breast Center at Anderson Hospital in Houston.
Bankruptcy
Private business after 1980 was less successful than John Connally's career as a Houston politician and lawyer. An oil company where he invests has trouble, and $ 200 million real estate projects fail. He filed for his personal financial reorganization under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code and for liquidation, under Chapter 7, of Barnes-Connally Partnership, a Austin-based real estate business he co-founded with former Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes. The auction pays only a fraction of the $ 93 million in debt listed on Connor with the bankruptcy court in Austin.

John Connally and Nellie were married at the First United Methodist Church in Austin on December 21, 1940. They had four children: Kathleen, John B. Connally III, Sharon, and Mark Madison. Robert Hale and Kathleen Connally Hale have been married 44 days at the time of his death. The Connallys remained married until John's death from pneumonia in 1993.
