Leukemia & amp; The Lymphoma Society (LLS), a 501 (c) (3) charity organization, founded in 1949, is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to the fight against blood cancer. The LLS is: Cures leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improves the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS funded blood cancer research worldwide, providing free and supportive information and support services for all blood cancer patients seeking access to quality, affordable, coordinated care.

LLS has five specialized fundraising campaigns including Team In Training, Light The Night (community-based strolls celebrating, honoring or remembering those touched by cancer), and the Student Series (K- 12 service learning programs to raise awareness and funding to fight cancer of the blood). Man & amp; Woman of the Year (annual competition in which candidates compete to honor children who survived local blood cancer) and Leukemia Cup Regatta (a series of fundraising events). Originally known as Robert Roesler de Villiers Foundation , The Leukemia & amp; The Lymphoma Society was founded in New York City in 1949 by Rudolph and Antoinette de Villiers after the death of their son Robert from leukemia. The name of the organization was later changed to Leukemia Society of America in the 1960s, and then to The Leukemia & amp; Lymphoma Society in 2000 to reflect the organization's focus on all types of blood cancer.

Research
Since 1949, The Leukemia & amp; The Lymphoma Society has invested more than $ 1.2 billion in advanced blood cancer research, funding almost all of today's most promising treatments. Since there is no way to prevent blood cancer, the LLS research agenda is focused on finding care and healing. The organization funded research on unmet medical needs and helped to bridge the gap between academic discovery and drug development.
For example, acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a daunting and urgent challenge. AML is a rapidly growing disease that remains one of the deadliest blood cancers, killing more than 10,000 Americans a year. Despite advances in treating other blood cancers, the standard of treatment for AML - a combination of toxic chemotherapies - has changed little over the past four decades. In October 2016, LLS launched the Beat AML Master Clinical Trial, a precision clinical trial that provides targeted therapies based on their genetic markers.
LLS leads the Beat Amel Master Clinical Trial and is the first nonprofit cancer organization to sponsor clinical trials. The trial consists of collaborations between several leading cancer centers and pharmaceutical companies, clinical research organizations, and genomic analysis companies. The protocol for trials was developed with input from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Trial Defeating AML The Clinical Master is expected to eventually cover 500 patients and will continue for at least two years between 15 and 20 clinical sites.
Patient Support
Leukemia & amp; Lymphoma Society is a very specialized source of information, education, and blood cancer support for patients, survivors, families and health care professionals. LLS helps patients navigate their cancer care and ensure they have access to quality, affordable, and coordinated care.
In 1997, the LLS created the Information Resource Center (IRC) to provide patients with blood cancer, their families, and healthcare professionals with accurate, up-to-date information, resources and disease support. Blood Cancer Specialist LLS Specialist is a master level social worker oncologist, nurse and health educator. An Information Specialist can help patients through cancer treatments, financial and social challenges and provide accurate and up-to-date information on illness, care and support.
As a community-based voluntary healthcare organization, LLS has regional and local branches throughout the United States and Canada to support blood cancer patients in every community.
Advocacy
Leukemia & amp; The Office of Public Policy Lymphoma Society pursues the LLS mission through advocacy aimed at government decision-makers.
Through a nationwide LLS grassroots network of more than 100,000 volunteers, the organization advocates state and federal policies to remove barriers to treating blood cancer patients. These efforts include helping to increase federal research funds, speeding up the process of reviewing and approving new therapies, and ensuring patients can access their care.
LLS also supports public policy positions that accelerate progress towards healing for leukemia, Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of those suffering from blood cancers, their friends and family.
Fundraising Campaign
Through Leukemia & amp; The Lymphoma Society fundraising campaign helps participants to support life-saving research, patient support and education, and helpful advocacy efforts for blood cancer patients. LLS has been a pioneer in creating theme-driven fund raising campaigns, including: Team In Training, the world's first and largest charity endurance training program in the world, raising more than $ 1.5 billion for blood cancer research and patient support since its inception in the year 1988 and trained more than 650,000 teammates.
Light The Night is a powerful campaign that brings light to the darkness of cancer. One million friends, family, and co-workers gather together, bringing illuminated lanterns on inspiring afternoon passes to celebrate, honor, or remember those touched by cancer.
In addition every year, influential leaders from communities across the country are involved in a ten-week fundraising competition to earn the LLS Man & amp; The Best Woman of the Year. The candidates form teams and raise funds for blood cancer research in honor of the local children who survived blood cancer, Boy and Girl of the Year. Every dollar raised is counted as one vote and the title is given to men and women with the most votes at the end of 10 weeks. The top local fundraiser is eligible to win the national title.
The Student Series is a learning service, character education, and philanthropy program in which students gain experience helping thousands of people in their fight against blood cancer. Schools participating in the Student Series program receive a comprehensive and experience-based K-5 STEM curriculum to be incorporated into their fundraising campaign. The curriculum gives K-5 students an in-depth view of LLS-funded science, encompassing key Core Nucleus skills and enables students to learn how the money they generate impacts. In addition, high school students can participate in Student of The Year campaigns, leadership development programs and lucrative fundraising competitions. Every dollar is raised as a vote. Candidates/teams that collect the most money at the end of the seven-week competition get the Student (s) of the Year title.
Leukemia Cup Regatta is a series of exciting sailing events that combine the joys of boating with the important task of raising money to cure cancer. At an event held at a yacht club in North America, the skippers registered their boats and recruited friends and colleagues to help the crew and raise funds. Crew members sought donations from friends, family, co-workers, and employers to sponsor their boats. More than $ 62 million has been raised through Regatta Cup Leukemia series for research and patient support since its inception in 1988.
In addition to the five signature campaigns, chapters, individuals, and groups raise funds for LLS in various ways. LLS Lifestyle is activity-based fundraising that encourages people to start their own fundraising events for LLS or connect fundraising to local events or activities of their choice.
