History

The Sisters of Mercy came to Phoenix in 1892 to open a parochial school. They succeed in that endeavor, but are also greatly affected by the suffering of tuberculosis victims. Recognizing the urgent need of the community, the sisters expanded their initial mission and began raising funds to establish a sanitarium.

Their efforts are paying off. They raised enough money to rent a six-bedroom brick at Fourth and Polk Streets in January 1895. They furnished each room with two beds for tuberculosis patients and built their own room in the living room. Sanitarium St. Joseph was born.

Two months later, the Sisters have raised enough funds to build a "real hospital". On March 19, 1895, a milestone was pushed to the ground to mark the place to be a hospital that had 24 private rooms that opened onto the veranda.

Over the years, there was an addition to the building, of course, and a terrible fire in 1917, after which the building was reconstructed in just 90 days. The facilities are rebuilt enough for the community over the next 30 years, but the locals continue to grow significantly. In 1930, the population of the Phoenix was 48,118. By 1945, it had reached nearly 100,000. St. Hospital Joseph needed more facilities.

In the mid-1940s, the Sisters bought 10 hectares of land (4.0 ha) on Third Avenue and Thomas Road which was part of the old dairy farm. They were criticized for choosing the land as far north of the city, literally abroad. But the sisters have foresight and a keen understanding of good business deals. The 10 hectares cost only $ 25,000.

In November 1947, a fundraising campaign started raising money to build a new hospital. This facility opened in July 1953.

In 2010, Bishop Thomas Olmsted revoked hospital affiliations with the Roman Catholic Church in controversy over medical procedures and church teachings (see below).

On April 13, 2007, the hospital performed the first recorded lung transplant in Phoenix, Arizona. Since then, more than 170 transplants have been performed by the program.

BNI has the largest neurosurgical residency program in the United States, in 2013. The current director of BNI is a vascular neurosurgeon Robert F. Spetzler, a position he has held since 1986.

Controversy

The hospital at the end of 2009 had a maternal patient of four people who were 11 weeks pregnant and suffering from severe cases of pulmonary hypertension. Doctors estimate that her chances of dying if she continues her pregnancy are "nearly 100 percent". An ethics council approved abortion to save the lives of mothers, even though the hospital was Catholic and in the diocese of Phoenix. A religious sister, Sister Margaret Mary McBride, who is vice president of the hospital and who approves the decision, was ostracized by Thomas Olmsted, Bishop of Phoenix. The case sparked a fierce debate from inside and outside the region. McBride was later restored to good standing with the church, religious community, and hospital.

Bishop Olmsted asked Catholic Healthcare West to provide a moral analysis of the case. He then issued a decision on December 21, 2010 to repeal the hospital's affiliation with the Catholic Church, after months of discussion has failed to encourage hospital management to refuse to have a similar abortion in the future. Olmsted writes that he can not verify that hospitals provide health care that is consistent with "authentic Catholic moral teaching."
