History

Northwest Memorial Hospital was established 1 September 1972 by consolidation of two oldest hospitals in Chicago - the Passavant Memorial (founded 1865) and Wesley Memorial (founded 1888). The Northwestern Memorial preliminary hospital has roots in the Lutheran deformed and Methodist Episcopal movement of Chicago, a women's spiritual community organized during the nineteenth century to provide for the sick and needy.

In 1914 philanthropist James Deering awarded Wesley Memorial $ 1 million to support free care and strengthened hospital ties with Northwestern University medical school. Wesley agreed to join Northwestern University on the new North Side campus in 1924, but funding for new building construction was postponed until the 1930s. In the meantime, Northwestern University offers Passavant Memorial affiliates and sites for new hospitals, which opened in 1929. The new Wesley Memorial facility was completed in 1941, and over the next thirty years two institutions, located across the street from each other in the Streeterville community, served as the premier educational hospital for Northwestern University Medical School.

Over time, hospitals began collaborating in a number of clinical teaching services and programs, setting out moving plans for long-term mergers. This process was accelerated by the establishment of the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in 1966, which focused on joint purchasing, joint facilities, graduate medical education and group practice development, continuing joint planning efforts towards an integrated medical center.

In 1994, construction began at a new 2 million square foot facility in a block bordered by Fairbanks Court, St. Clair, Huron and Erie Streets. On May 1, 1999, the 17-story Feinberg Pavilion and the 22nd floor Galter Pavilion opened. A model facility for healthcare providers, hundreds of local, national and international tour groups visit the Northwest Memorial Hospital every year.

The new Prentice Women's Hospital opened on October 20, 2007 on the campus grounds. The former Prentice Women's Hospital was designed by Bertrand Goldberg.

On October 12, 2015, Northwest Memorial Hospital named Julie L. Creamer as the first female President. Creamer received BSN from Marquette University and earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Shortly after graduating from Marquette University he started his nursing career at Northwestern and became part of the hospital management team in 1996. He was instrumental in planning and building a new hospital that opened in 1999.
