Three recognized names: Comprehensive Cancer Center , Cancer Center , and Basic Laboratory Cancer Center . By 2017, there are 49 Comprehensive Cancer Centers, 13 Cancer Centers, and 7 Basic Laboratory Cancer Centers. Almost everything is related to the university. Accepting the establishment of NCI puts cancer centers among the top 4 percent of about 1500 cancer centers in the United States.

The standards for the Comprehensive Cancer Center are the least restrictive of the type. The facility should demonstrate expertise in each of the three areas: laboratory, clinical, and behavioral and population-based research. The Comprehensive Cancer Center is expected to begin and conduct initial phases, innovative clinical trials and to participate in the NCI cooperative group by providing leadership and recruiting patients for trials. The Comprehensive Cancer Center should also undertake activities in outreach and education, and provide information on advances in health care for health care professionals and the public. Comprehensive cancer center can apply up to $ 1.5 million per year. The Clinical Cancer Center generally performs basic combinations, population sciences, and clinical research, and is encouraged to stimulate collaborative research involving more than one subject area. Clinical cancer centers may apply up to $ 1.4 million per year. Basic Laboratory Cancer Center only conducts laboratory research and does not provide patient care. Basic Laboratory Cancer Centers are more often affiliated with research institutions than universities. They are eligible to apply up to $ 1.2 million per year. Independent or free-standing cancer centers are entities for themselves and are not considered part of larger institutions or universities. The central administration controls all spaces, appointments, and budgets. These institutions may have university affiliations, but they remain administratively and financially different.

Cancer centers should update their status with NIH every 5 years. NIH funded cancer centers through the P30 Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) mechanism. To be eligible to enroll, the cancer center should receive at least $ 10 million in cancer research funding annually. Preparation for this grant application can be very wide. The latest grant application prepared by MD Anderson Cancer Center takes 24 months to prepare and 2,963 pages.

NCI considers the following characteristics essential for cancer centers, and requires that applications address the institutional resources in the areas of:

  • Physical Space
  • Organizational Ability
  • Transdisciplinary Collaboration and Coordination
  • Cancer Focus
  • Institutional Commitment
  • Director Center

These funds fund shared resources for further purposes of the National Cancer Institute. Some of these include the administration of cancer research programs, training activities, core facilities with technology shared by researchers, and clinical trial management services.

NCI also supports the Consortium Center , where scientists and doctors from various institutions enter into formal agreements to expand cancer research programs.
