Origins
September was first designated as National Prostate Health Month by the American Foundation for Urological Illness (AFUD) in 1999. AFUD is now known as the Urology Care Foundation. Initially the purpose of observing NPHM is more off limits, concentrating on making people better informed about prostate health problems
In 2001, Senate Resolution 138 sponsored by Senator Conrad Burns (R-MT) supported this week and confirmed that the Prostate Health Month will be observed each year. In the presidential proclamation of 2003, President George W. Bush declared his support for the month, but instead set the month for prostate health in general, specifically named the month of "National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month."

In 1989, the decade before the creation of the National Prostate Health Month, the week of 17 September to 24 September was selected as Prostate Cancer Awareness Week. After the creation of NPHM, September came to include warnings from other related health weeks. Week Awareness of Prostatitis was observed from September 10 to September 16 and the Benigna Hypertension Prevention Awareness Week was observed from 24 September to 30 September. However, not all men's health problems are commemorated in September. The Testis Cancer Awareness Week, for example, is celebrated for weeks 1 April to 7 April.

Events
Oncology funds, health systems, medical centers and NGOs, such as Men's Health Network, are just a few of the US organizations that sponsor events during the National Prostate Health Month. Free checks for prostate related diseases are offered in hospitals, health centers, and workplaces. Doctors are sent information on how NPHW can be used as a way to remind patients about their prostate health. The Board of Prostate Cancer Education uses the popularity of the sport to spread awareness of the health effects of prostate and resources. For example, NFL teams dedicate home games to awareness of prostate cancer, golf tournaments and 5k races distributing informational materials to audiences and participants in exchange for reward incentives.
The Men's Health Network maintains the Prostate Health Month website at http://www.prostatehealthmonth.com and the Prostate Cancer Awareness website at http://prostatecancerawarenessmonth.com which includes links to organizations that actively promote prostate cancer education and events during that month.
