The National Cancer Survivors Day is a secular holiday celebrated on the first Sunday in June especially in the United States. The day is meant to "show that life after cancer diagnosis can become a reality". Though mainly celebrated in the United States, the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation seeks to increase its popularity in other countries, with some success.

History

The National Cancer Rescue Day was first announced by Merril Hastings at the second national conference of the National Coalition for Cancer Treatment in Albuquerque, New Mexico on November 20, 1987. Later, Hastings filed the name as the International Class Service 042, as well as registering with the Patent and Trademark Office United States Trade on behalf of Pulse Publishing.

The first National Cancer Rescue Day was held on June 5, 1988. Twenty-two National Cancer Day Victims have occurred since then.

Events

Cities, towns, hospitals, and local support groups usually hold events and celebrations on National Cancer Day. Celebrations can include parades, carnivals, art exhibitions, contests, and testimonies to honor local cancer victims.

The 2008 celebrations include the start of US President George W. Bush and director of the National Cancer Institute.

Antigua and Barbuda include walking and running as part of their celebrations since 2007.

Expansion

The National Cancer Rescue Foundation seeks to expand holiday celebrations around the world, with some limited success. Targeted countries include Canada, Cayman Islands, Antigua, Trinidad, Tobago, Italy, Netherlands, India, Malaysia, Guam. Australia, South Africa, and American Samoa.
