History

NBCAM was founded in 1985 in October as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries (now part of AstraZeneca, a manufacturer of some breast cancer anti-cancer drugs). The goal of NBCAM since its inception is to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer.

In 1993 Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President Està © e Lauder Companies, founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and set the pink ribbon as its symbol, though this is not the first time a ribbon is used to symbolize breast cancer: a 68 California woman aged 21 year-old Charlotte Haley, whose sister, daughter, and granddaughter have breast cancer, has distributed a peach color band to draw attention to what she considers to be inadequate research funding. In the fall of 1991, Susan G. Komen Foundation had distributed pink ribbons to participants in the New York City race for breast cancer victims.

In 2010, Delta Air Lines painted the N845MH, a Boeing 767-432ER in a special "Breast Cancer Research Foundation" color. In September 2015, a new version of the pattern was painted on the same plane.

Criticism

The inspiration for the NBCAM foundation comes from Zeneca Inc. in 1989 when they started a breast cancer screening program in their company. In 1996, with a screening and study program completed, Zeneca Inc. analyzes the total amount of money lost due to an increase in health care provided compared to the total amount of money lost if the company tear apart the program compared. The total cost for the company running an early detection program is estimated at $ 400,000. The total cost for the company if they choose not to run the program is estimated at about $ 1.5 million.

Pezzullo (2003) "(Astra) Zeneca's initial justification for NBCAM is one of the foundations of accounting, not a critique of how women's health has been assessed or implemented or a desire to prevent women from breast cancer; rather, it is cost effective for a company to detect cancer in its employees during the previous stage of the disease. "

Critics say that "the idea of BCAM" was conceived and paid for by a British chemical company that profited from this epidemic and probably contributed to the cause... '".

Sometimes referred to as the Month of the National Breast Cancer Industry , NBCAM critics point out the conflict of interest between companies that sponsor breast cancer awareness while taking advantage of diagnosis and treatment. Breast Cancer Action advocacy organization has said repeatedly in bulletins and other sources of information that October has been a public relations campaign that avoids discussion of the causes and prevention of breast cancer and instead focuses on "consciousness" as a way to encourage women to get mammograms they. The term pinkwashing has been used by the Breast Cancer Action to describe the actions of companies that produce and use chemicals that show links with breast cancer and at the same time openly support charitable activities that focus on healing illness. Another criticism centers on the marketing of "pink products" and tie-ins, arguing that more money is spent on marketing this campaign than donated for the cause. According to The New York Times in October 2015, the fine print rejection of a pink product sold by Dick's Sporting Goods revealed that in some cases, no money at all was donated to breast cancer research. Other companies limit the amount they provide for research during each "pink" campaign in October, but do not tell consumers when the limit is reached.
