Event history
In 1996, charity founder, Nina Barough, dreamed that she was in power running in a New York City marathon with a bra to raise money for breast cancer. He decided to do that and that year he and 13 friends walked together and raised  £ 25,000 between them. Two months later Barough found a lump in her own breasts and was diagnosed with her own breast cancer. Throughout his treatment for breast cancer he continues to walk as a way to stay fit and positive during his treatment. Upon receiving everything, he and a group of 50 people plan to walk the London Marathon to raise more money. There is not enough space available so Barough organizes his own walk through London the night before the marathon is scheduled - this is where the idea of a nocturnal journey begins. Over the years the event grew to include thousands of participants, who gathered together in a large tent before departing through the streets of London around 11 pm. Each show has themes and pedestrians adorn their bra.
In 2006, Scotland's first MoonWalk was held in Edinburgh - offering challenging routes through the city and further distances including a 52.2 mile back-to-back marathon ("Over The Moon") and a 6.55 mile walk aimed at kids' child and pedestrian novice ("New Moon") So far the charity has amassed Ã, Â £ 19 million through WalkWalk Scotland, with most of the money spent living north of the border.
There are also walks on Lake Myvatn, Iceland, which is because the location is the only overnight road that takes place during the day. This route is more rural, starting and ending in the lake's hot springs.
