Houston Methodist Hospital is Houston Methodist's flagship hospital. Located at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas, the Methodist Houston Hospital was founded in 1919 as an outreach service of Methodist Episcopal Church. The hospital is consistently classified as "One of the Best Hospitals in America" ​​according to US News and World Reports. History
Originally located near downtown Houston, the hospital was moved to Texas Medical Center and opened a 300 bed facility in 1951.
The belated cardiac surgeon Michael E. DeBakey, then a faculty member and then Chancellor Emeritus of Baylor College of Medicine, withdrew the first carotid artery blockage (1950); first aortic coronary bypass surgery (1964); first use of ventricular aids to pump blood and support ailing heart (1966); and some of the first US heart transplants (1968 and 1969) in the hospital.
The Houston Methodist, which comprises the Texas Medical Center facility and several newly built regional hospitals, was established in 1996 to expand Houston Methodist health services beyond Texas Medical Center and to communities throughout Houston.

Houston Methodist, University of Houston, and Weill Cornell Medical College from Cornell University jointly founded the Institute for Biomedical Imaging Science. The institute will create an interdisciplinary program in biomedical imaging and will develop joint training programs to produce basic and applied scientists.

Houston Methodist St. John Hospital and Houston Methodist St. Catherine Hospital joins the Houston Methodist in partnership with CHRISTUS Health. Majority ownership of CHRIST John Hospital and CHRIST Catherine Hospital moved to Houston Methodist on February 3, 2014. CHRIST John Hospital in the Nassau Bay/Clear Lake area continues under the name of Methodist Houston and under the Houston Methodist management. Houston Methodist St. Catherine has been planned to return to a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) to complement the Houston Methodist service that already offers the western Houston/Katy community. Houston Methodist St. Catherine Hospital, located at 701 S. Fry Road, Katy, TX 77450, is a long-acting care hospital (LTACH) serving the Greater Houston area, for patients requiring long stay. As an extension of the Houston Methodist West Hospital just two miles away, some outpatient services are offered on the Houston Methodist St. campus. Catherine, including imaging, outpatient rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation and wound care.
Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in 2017 at the intersection of TX 242 and I-45. The hospital will have 193 beds and 470,000 square feet. Additionally, a medical office building with 135,000 square feet is scheduled to open in 2016. Houston Methodist The Woodlands will be the eighth in the Houston Methodist system, offering the Woodlands community a full-service hospital, acute care with many of the same services as a flagship hospital they are at Texas Medical Center.
