Derrick M. Hall (born February 17, 1969) is an American sports executive who currently serves as president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Arizona Diamondbacks.

Hall joined Diamondbacks in May 2005 as senior vice president of communications and served in various capacities before being appointed president in September 2006 and added the CEO position in January 2009. Prior to joining Diamondbacks, Hall served as senior vice president of Los Angeles Dodgers and Fortune 500 KB Home.

During Hall's tenure, Diamondbacks have won two National League Western Division Championships (2007, '11), Wild Card (2017), one NLCS (2007). Hall also negotiated the largest financial transaction in franchise history - a historic 20-year-old television rights agreement with FOX Sports, hosting Major League Baseball All-Star and the World Baseball Classic at Chase Field. The corporate culture of D-back, created by Hall, leads Yahoo! and Forbes regards the club as "the best workplace in the sport" and Rise Global to name Hall into the list of 100 Most Influential CEOs.

Early life and education

Hall was born as the youngest of two sons in Los Angeles, California on February 17, 1969 to the natives of Arkansas, Larry and Annetta Hall. His father worked in the newspaper industry, which caused Derrick to move throughout the United States during his childhood. He grew up in a Jewish household.

Despite receiving admission to the United States Military Academy with a nomination from United States Senator Harry Reid, the Hall attended Arizona State University in a speech and scholarship debate. He went on to receive a bachelor's degree in broadcasting and journalism from Arizona State University, where he was named "Man of the Year" in 1991. The Hall then became the first student in school history to receive the prestigious Founders both ASU Day Alumni Achievement Award and ASU young Alumni Achievement Award, which he received in 2003. The Hall was inducted into ASU's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and the Hall of Fame Mass Communication Alumni in 2002.

He later received a master's degree from Ohio University in sports administration. In 2006, Ohio University's Sports Administration Program recognized Hall as the 25th recipient of Charles R. Higgins Distinguished Alumnus Award. In 2012, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Phoenix and spoke at a school meeting.

Initial career

Prior to joining D-back, Hall paused as senior vice president of corporate communications for Fortune 500 company, KB Home, based in Los Angeles, where he increased brand awareness. He spent part of 12 seasons with Los Angeles Dodgers, joining the Florida-based Single-A Florida State League affiliate in Vero Beach, Florida, as an apprentice in 1992 and left as senior vice president of communications in 2004.

Pro-State Foundation

During the 2011 baseball season, Hall was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Hall has been in remission after a successful surgery and an indication that the cancer has not spread.

In a 2013 interview Hall said about suffering from cancer, "It certainly makes you appreciate life.You realize how important family members are.I really appreciate everyday with my wife and kids.This has changed me.No doubt After your cancer awakens up.This forces you to live a happier lifestyle, but it also forces you to enjoy each day and count your blessings.
